Alan Herline

Dr. Alan Herline is a Colon and Rectal surgeon and an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Herline's diverse background includes an undergraduate degree in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering followed by work as an engineering consultant and project manager prior to attending medical school. He spent a two year fellowship during his general surgery training as the principal investigator on an NIH/NRSA grant that first looked at the feasibility and proof of concept for image-guided liver surgery. This was performed under the mentorship of Drs. Robert Galloway and Will Chapman, and led to the funding of an R21/R33 grant. Dr. Herline is currently overseeing new developments with laparoscopic ultrasound and its use in image guided liver surgery as well as the development of tracked transrectal ultrasound for use in rectal cancer patients.
