IRED Localization Probe

The localization probe has twenty (20) staggered infrared emitting diodes located in the handle. These IREDs are activated in sequence and detected by the NDI Certus Position Sensor. By performing a probe characterization, the exact relationship of each IRED to the other IREDs may be determined, which then allows the position sensor to determine the probe position and orientation. The probe may then be pivoted about the tip, and the exact tip location determined. Finally, this tip position is transformed into image space coordinates and displayed on a computer monitor using the Linasys software platform.

The tracked body of the probe has a threaded sleeve which different handles and tips may be inserted into. This makes it possible to use the body with other instruments.
